First edition of the collected first four issues of Simon's Wine and Food Quarterly. Octavo, original cloth. In very good condition. From the library of John and Ellert Webster Forbes with their gastronomical bookplate to the pastedown. Ellert Webster Forbes was the husband of American-British food writer Marcelle Azra Hincks, known by the nom de plume Countess Morphy and famed for her book on world gastronomy.
An influential figure in the English wine trade, Simon established the Wine and Food Society in 1933 with the objective of bringing connoisseurs together to appreciate food and wine as an essential part of personal contentment and good health. At this same time, he established the quarterly journal Wine and Food which helped to transform the study of gastronomy before, during and after the Second World War with articles about the history of wine and food, book reviews and critical assessments of hotels and restaurants.
