First Edition of The Spirit of St. Louis; Inscribed by Charles Lindbergh in the month of publication to legendary environmentalist Marjory Douglas
First edition of Lindbergh's autobiographical account about the events leading up to and including his 1927 solo trans-Atlantic flight. Octavo, original blue cloth, illustrated endpapers, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author in the month of publication on the title page, "To Marjory Douglas, with admiration and best wishes Charles A. Lindbergh Sept. 1953 Publication date is Sept. 14th." The recipient Marjory Douglas was a journalist, author, women's suffrage advocate, and conservationist known for her staunch defense of the Everglades against efforts to drain it and reclaim land for development. She lived to 108, working until nearly the end of her life for Everglades restoration. Upon her death, The Independent stated, "In the history of the American environmental movement, there have been few more remarkable figures than Marjory Stoneman Douglas."
