The Scarecrow of Oz (1915) is the ninth volume in L. Frank Baum's celebrated Oz series and holds the singular distinction of being Baum's personal favorite among all the Oz books — a preference that lends the novel a particular biographical interest beyond its considerable narrative merits. The story follows Cap'n Bill, a peg-legged sailor, and his young companion Trot, who are pulled by a freak whirlpool into an underwater cave and set upon a journey that carries them through a series of enchanted kingdoms before arriving in Oz, where they join forces with the Scarecrow to overthrow the corrupt King Krewl of Jinxland and restore the frozen heart of Princess Gloria. The plot is a reworking of Baum's 1914 silent film His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz, produced by the Oz Film Manufacturing Company — in which a small group of his social circle, the Uplifters of Los Angeles, had invested $100,000 with Baum named as president. The film's commercial disappointment did not dampen the novel's long-term appeal: while the first edition sold approximately 14,300 copies — only modestly above its predecessor — The Scarecrow of Oz went on to become one of the more popular installments in the series. Illustrated throughout by John R. Neill with twelve full-color plates and more than one hundred black-and-white drawings, the first edition in its original green cloth binding is among the most sought-after collectibles in the Baum canon.
