W. Somerset Maugham’s short story “The Judgement Seat” follows three people—a husband, his wife Mary, and the husband’s lover—who die together in a shipwreck and awaken in a strange celestial courtroom awaiting divine judgment. As their tense triangle is laid bare, the story revisits the long aftermath of betrayal: Mary’s inability to forgive, the couple’s cold, duty-bound marriage, and the quiet damage caused by pride, resentment, and emotional cruelty. In a sharp reversal of expectations, Maugham suggests that what truly condemns them is not sexual sin itself, but their persistent lack of compassion, charity, and genuine love.
