Spheres of Justice: A Defense of Pluralism and Equality (1983) is widely regarded as the masterwork of Michael Walzer, Professor Emeritus of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and one of the most distinguished political philosophers of the postwar American academy. The book explores distributive justice — the fair allocation of goods and resources in society — and argues against the idea of a single universal principle of justice that can be applied uniformly across all spheres of life, proposing instead that different social goods should be distributed according to different principles, taking into account the specific characteristics and values of each sphere. The central concept Walzer advances is what he calls "complex equality" — the argument that tyranny arises not from inequality per se but from the illegitimate crossing of boundaries between spheres, as when wealth purchases political power or social prestige buys educational advantage. His analysis extends beyond the familiar terrain of wealth and power to encompass the distribution of honor, education, work, free time, and even love, making the book one of the most ambitious and wide-ranging treatments of social justice in the Anglo-American philosophical tradition.
