"Let Me Tell You Something You Already Know. The World Ain't All Sunshine and Rainbows": First Edition of Rocky; Signed by Sylvester Stallone
First edition of the novelization of Rocky, the 1976 cinematic landmark that claimed the Academy Award for Best Picture and transformed Sylvester Stallone from unknown screenwriter into one of the defining stars of his generation. Octavo, original pictorial wrappers. Boldly signed by Sylvester Stallone in person on the half-title page. In very good condition. Signed first editions are very uncommon.
Written by Stallone and adapted from his own Oscar-nominated screenplay, the novelization of Rocky appeared as a paperback original from Ballantine Books in advance of the film's theatrical release, intended to extend the reach of a modestly budgeted independent production few in Hollywood expected to succeed. The book preserves, in prose, the same working-class lyricism that distinguished the screenplay - the cadences of a Philadelphia neighborhood, the interior life of a club fighter granted an impossible chance - and stands as a rare instance of a major American film whose source novelization was authored by its creator rather than a contracted hand. Produced for roughly one million dollars and shot in under a month, the film became the highest-grossing release of 1976, claimed the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing, and earned Stallone simultaneous nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay; a distinction shared only with Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles. It has since been inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress and is widely regarded as one of the defining works of American popular cinema.
