"Image was shot from a Pepsi commercial on TV": First Edition of Michael Crichton's Rising Sun; Inscribed by Him and Signed Three Times by Legendary Jacket Designer Chip Kidd in the Year of Publication
First edition of this work, basis for the film starring Sean Connery. Octavo, original half-cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by Michael Crichton in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "For Pat - How great to see you again! Let's do lunch! Best wishes - Michael Crichton LA 4/8/92." Boldly signed three times by jacket designer Chip Kidd; on the front panel, on the front free endpaper, and the rear jacket flap. Including an inscription by Kidd in the year of publication on the front panel of the dust jacket, "Image was shot from a Pepsi commercial on TV Chip Kidd 1992." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Chip Kidd. Unique.
Crichton's eighth novel published under his own name and eighteenth overall, Rising Sun unravels the details of a murder in the Los Angeles headquarters of Nakamoto, a fictional Japanese corporation. Although a detective/murder mystery novel at first glance, Rising Sun deals with the controversial subject of Japanese-American relations, and questions the premise that foreign direct investment in the high-technology sectors of the United States is beneficial. Throughout the book, the differences between the Japanese and Western mindsets are highlighted, especially in the areas of business strategy and corporate culture.
