"I have not campaigned either for the Presidency or the Vice Presidency. I am indebted to no man and only to one woman, my dear wife as I begin this very difficult job. My fellow Americans, Our long national nightmare is over. Our constitution works": First Edition of Hugh Sidey's Portrait of a President; Lengthily Signed by President Gerald R. Ford with a Quote from His 1974 Speech on Taking Office
First edition of this intimate, behind-the-scenes look at President Gerald R. Ford during his early days in office. Square octavo, original publisher's cloth with a vignette of the Whitehouse stamped in blind to the front panel, facsimile signature to the front free endpaper, profusely illustrated with black and white photographs from Ford's presidency. Lengthily signed by Ford on the title page with a quote from his August 9, 1974 speech on taking the presidency, "I have not campaigned either for the Presidency or the Vice Presidency. I am indebted to no man and only to one woman, my dear wife as I begin this very difficult job. My fellow Americans, Our long national nightmare is over. Our constitution works. Gerald R. Ford 9/21/80." Near fine in a very good unclipped dust jacket with a small loss to the foot of the spine. Text by Hugh Sidey. Photographs by Fred Ward. Jacket design by Bob Nemser. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from PSA. A unique example.
Gerald R. Ford (1913–2006) served as the 38th President of the United States from 1974 to 1977, assuming office upon the resignation of Richard Nixon and becoming the only individual to hold the presidency without having been elected to either the vice presidency or the presidency. A longtime member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Michigan and House Minority Leader, Ford’s administration was marked by efforts to restore public trust in government in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal. His presidency addressed economic challenges, including inflation and recession, and significant foreign policy developments such as the continuation of détente with the Soviet Union and the final stages of the Vietnam War. Ford’s controversial pardon of Nixon remains one of the defining and most debated decisions of his tenure.
