John Michael "Ozzy" Osbourne was an English rock singer, songwriter, and cultural icon whose career across more than five decades made him one of the most recognizable and influential figures in the history of heavy metal — a genre to which he contributed as both founding member of Black Sabbath and as a prolific and commercially dominant solo artist. Born in the Aston district of Birmingham, England, into a working-class family, Osbourne co-founded Black Sabbath in 1968 alongside guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward — a band whose down-tuned, blues-derived, and deliberately ominous sound is widely credited with inventing the sonic vocabulary of heavy metal and influencing virtually every significant hard rock and metal act that followed. Osbourne sold more than 100 million albums across his solo work and Black Sabbath releases, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Black Sabbath in 2006 and as a solo artist in 2024. His solo career, launched after his dismissal from Black Sabbath in 1979, produced thirteen studio albums and five Grammy Awards, including the enduring hard rock anthems "Crazy Train" and "No More Tears." In his later years he starred in the pioneering MTV reality series The Osbournes (2002–2005) alongside his wife and manager Sharon and their children, and battled Parkinson's disease with characteristic public candor. On July 5, 2025, Osbourne performed his final concert at Villa Park in Birmingham alongside the original Black Sabbath lineup — rendered unable to stand by his illness, he performed seated on a black throne before a crowd of more than 40,000, with all proceeds donated to Parkinson's and children's health charities. He died seventeen days later, on July 22, 2025, at the age of seventy-six, surrounded by his family.
