Rare first edition of Henry M. Stanley's My Kalulu
First edition of Stanley's popular classic. Octavo, bound in three quarter morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, top edge gilt, illustrated with 16 engravings.
Ndugu M’Hali, known as Kalulu, was the personal servant and companion to explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley. He was given to Stanley as a slave by an Arab merchant in present day Tanzania during the explorer’s quest to find the missing Dr. David Livingstone. Named Kalulu by Stanley, he was educated in London and accompanied Stanley on his travels to Europe, America and the Seychelles. He inspired Stanley’s 1873 romance novel ‘My Kalulu, Prince, King and Slave: A Story of Central Africa’. He died tragically during an expedition in 1877 in the Lualaba River, the headstream of the River Congo. Stanley later renamed these rapids ‘Kalulu Falls’ in his memory.
