First edition, early printing of this seminal work of American nature writing, documenting the author's experiences through California’s Sierra Nevada in 1869. Octavo, original green cloth with gilt titles to the spine, pictorial front panel stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, tissue-guarded frontispiece, illustrated from drawings made by the author in 1869 and from gravure plates photographs by Herbert W. Gleason with printed tissue guards. In near fine condition, name to the front free endpaper. A very nice example.
At age 72, John Muir began to compile his notes for this book, of which Kimes states, "With the skillful editing of his mature years, he retains the refreshing spontaneity and enthusiasm of his youthful experiences and observations, interspersed as they are with his lyrical and oft-times mystical reflections. Thus, this book, published near the apex of his career, reaps the competence of age while capturing the essence of youth, and becomes, we believe, his finest book" Kimes 299; BAL 14765. "Muir's book continues to inspire... it stands among the enduring classics of environmental literature" (Gregory McNamee).
