Centennial Edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio; From the Library of William Tecumseh Sherman
Centennial edition of this general and local history of the state of Ohio; from the library of William Tecumseh Sherman. Royal octavo, three volumes bound into two, original publisher's binding, botanical endpapers, gilt titles to the spine, gilt seal of Ohio to the front panel, frontispiece of the author to Vol. I and of Sherman's army wagons going through Zanesville to Vol. II and III, illustrated with photographs, maps, and drawings by the author. General Sherman and his son Philemon Tecumseh Sherman's bookplates to the front pastedown of each volume. In good condition with rubbing to the extremities and closed tears to the exterior hinges, splitting to the interior hinges of Vol. II and III. The second and third volumes are usually bound together and the actual three separate volumes are quite scarce today. General Sherman’s library was inherited by P. T. Sherman, who transferred the library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria “Minnie” Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, this set was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
William Tecumseh Sherman served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, achieving recognition for his command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched earth policies that he implemented against the Confederate States. In 1864, Sherman succeeded Grant as the Union commander in the Western Theater. He led the capture of the strategic city of Atlanta, a military success that contributed to the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman accepted the surrender of all the Confederate armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida in April 1865 and succeeded Ulysses S. Grant as Commanding General of the Army when Grant was elected President.
