First Edition of Economist on Wall Street; Inscribed by Peter Bernstein to His Sister Aline Bernstein Saarinen
First edition of this classic collection of early Bernstein writings. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to the author's sister, "For Aline - With all my love - Peter." The recipient, Aline Bernstein Saarinen was a well-known critic of art and architecture in the United States, an author and a television journalist, who married the architect Eero Saarinen. She was given the International Award for Best Foreign Criticism at the Venice Biennale in 1951. She received the Frank Jewett Mather Award for best newspaper art criticism in 1953, and the American Federation of Arts Award for best newspaper criticism in 1956. In 1964 she turned down an offer from President Lyndon B. Johnson of the post of ambassador to Finland. Aline was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Michigan in 1964 and another by the Russell Sage College in 1967. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Appelbaum & Curtis. Preface by Gilbert Kaplan. An exceptional association copy.
Peter Bernstein's Economist on Wall Street is a collection of writings from 1955 to 1970. The book is especially interesting because so many of Bernstein's observations reflect the most important issues of the presentâthe outlook for inflation and its control, the intricacies of monetary policy, the future of the dollar, and the dilemmas of household finances. Bernstein was also concerned with developments in portfolio management, including the new influence of institutional investors and rules for optimal asset mixes. He provides light touches, too, as he indulges in fantasies and philosophical musings over a wide variety of topics.
