Rare first edition, ninth printing of the DSM-I. Octavo, original wrappers and comb binding. In very good condition with some rippling, ownership signature to the front panel, front and rear pastedown, and title page. First editions of the DSM-I are incredibly rare in any printing.
DSM-I was first published in 1952 and quickly became the main reference tool for the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in the United States, but increasing critiques of some of its classifications, notably classifying homosexuality as a mental illness and defining mental illnesses according to guidelines at odds with the work of progressive psychologists and sociologists such as Thomas Szasz, led to a complete revision that first appeared in 1968. Currently DSM-V is the standard reference work consulted by mental health professionals.
