First Edition of Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine; Lengthily Inscribed by Him
First edition of Bradbury's semi-autobiographical novel. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, boldly inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Mr. Fenenbock - with the good wishes of Ray Bradbury 6/26/61." The recipient, Henry Fenenbock, was the owner of the historic Beverly Hills Writers & Artists Building, a well-known center of Los Angeles literary and artistic life during the mid-twentieth century. The building housed writers, screenwriters, artists, and intellectuals associated with Hollywood’s broader creative community, placing Fenenbock within the same cultural environment that shaped much of Bradbury’s work. Deeply connected to Los Angeles throughout his career, Bradbury frequently drew upon the city’s artistic circles and atmosphere in both his fiction and personal life. This inscription reflects Bradbury’s connection to an important figure within that creative milieu and offers a notable association to the literary culture of mid-century Southern California. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Robert Vickrey. Jacket photograph by Bonny Adler. A very sharp example with noted provenance.
“Much of Bradbury’s work, whether in fantasy, science fiction, realistic fiction or even horror is infused with a pastoral nostalgia, and nowhere is this trait more pronounced than in Dandelion Wine. The author effectively evokes the transition of the novel’s protagonist from childhood to early adolescence” (Barron, Fantasy and Horror 7).
