Rare Autograph letter in the hand of great Victorian novelist Charles Dickens
Autograph letter in the hand of great Victorian novelist Charles Dickens. One page, dated December 20th, 1869, on bifolium of Gad's Hill Place stationery, and with a holograph envelope addressed to the Secretary of the School for the Indigent Blind. A third-person letter signed twice in the body of the text. During his visit to America, Dickens visited the Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts, then at the forefront of the printing of works for the use of the blind. He saw Howe's process for creating books with an embossed alphabet and arranged to have a quantity of books especially made. He sent two copies of The Old Curiosity Shop printed in raised letters for the use of the blind as made by the husband of Julia Ward Howe. In near fine condition with mail folds. The letter measures 4.5 inches by 7 inches. Accompanied with a holograph envelope in good condition with a small loss to the top right corner. The envelope measures 4.75 inches by 2.75 inches.
English writer and social critic Charles Dickens created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius.
