"There are mischievous spirits, practical jokers, and they are always liable to push in. The more one can keep it on high religious ground the safer one is from such intrusion": Rare Original Autograph Note Signed By Arthur Conan Doyle
Rare handwritten note signed by Arthur Conan Doyle concerning spiritualism. One page on plain paper, not date. The letter reads, "Such cases are unhappily not very rare. For this reason people should go into the literature of this subject before they practise it so that they may not be taken aback or compromise themselves by excessive trust. Every fresh step has to be tested and nothing taken for granted. There are mischievous spirits, practical jokers, and they are always liable to push in. The more one can keep it on high religious ground the safer one is from such intrusion. A Conan Doyle." With an added note beneath his signature, "The original inspiration was unquestionably all right, but one must discriminate." In near fine condition with a mailing crease and pencil notes in another hand and entirely crossed out to verso. Pinned to another letter on Conan Doyle’s Windlesham letterhead, entirely in the hand of his secretary Alfred H. Wood with his initials under his signature for Doyle. Addressed to Mrs. Temple Johnson and dated 22 October 1919, the brief note reads in full, "‘It is very interesting, but I fear would not make a book." Also in near fine condition.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a British writer, best known for creating the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes. Born in 1859, Doyle initially studied medicine and wrote several historical novels before achieving fame with his detective stories, beginning with A Study in Scarlet in 1887. His portrayal of Holmes, along with the character’s companion Dr. Watson, revolutionized the detective genre and has had a lasting influence on both literature and popular culture. In addition to his detective fiction, Doyle wrote historical novels, science fiction, and plays, and he was a passionate advocate for spiritualism.
