Rare first American illustrated edition, first state, with the title page dated 1873 of the author's classic work. Octavo, original cloth, pp. [i-iii] iv [v] vi-viii [ix-xi] xii-xvi [1] 2-315 [316: blank], fly leaves at front and rear, 54 inserted plates with illustrations by A. de Neuville and L. Benett, plus one small illustration by Benett in the text and an integral full-page sketch of the "Saint Michael" [sic, i.e. Michel] drawn by Verne, publisher's pictorial bevel-edged green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold and black, rear panel stamped in blind, brown coated endpapers, all edges plain. Translated by George M. Towle. In near fine condition with light restoration to the spine. First editions are rare.
