W. Somerset Maugham’s A Writer’s Notebook is a revealing, decades-long collection of personal notes and reflections kept between 1892 and 1949, offering an intimate view of his life, mind, and literary craft. Part journal and part creative workshop, it traces his development from his early years as a medical student through a lifetime of travel and writing, preserving the raw observations and anecdotes that later became the foundation for many of his stories and novels. Filled with sharp sketches of character, witty commentary, and a detached yet often moving tone, the notebook illuminates Maugham’s creative process, his ideas about storytelling, and his clear-eyed understanding of human emotion and behavior. A Writer's Notebook "shows [Maugham] at his best, as detached, observant, and affecting a pose of worldliness even in his apparent private thoughts" (Drabble 631).
