First edition of this complete and accessible guidebook to Mars. Octavo, original pictorial wrappers, illustrated with color photographs and a folding map of Martian markings charted by Earth-based telescopes in the 1960s. Association copy, boldly inscribed by the author to James Lovell on the title page, "For Jim Lovell with admiration! William K Hartmann." The recipient, James Lovell, was an Apollo 8 and Apollo 13 astronaut who was one of the first three astronauts to fly and orbit the moon alongside Frank Borman and William Anders. In near fine condition. From the collection of James Lovell. Accompanied by a sticker on the rear panel, "From The Capt. James Lovell Apollo 8 & 13 NASA Astronaut Estate," a certificate of authentication by Lovell's daughter, Barbara, and a later black and white portrait of Lovell in his space suit.
