Rare first American edition of the author's classic work. Duodecimo, bound in green cloth, pictorially decorated in gilt and blind, dark blue endpapers, edges stained red, two color title page. Tissue guarded frontispiece and introduction by Adrien Marx. Taves & Michaluk V011; Myers 54. Christmas 1911 inscription on recto of frontispiece from uncle to nephew; relating how this book was given to him by the publisher George Ticknor when they met on a trip to Boston as the book was just published. Also signed by Uncle Tom on title page. Translated by George M. Towle. In near fine condition with the gilt spine bright. An exceptional example, most rare in this condition and with noted provenance.
Around the World in Eighty Days is an adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, first published in French in 1872. In the story, Phileas Fogg of London and his newly employed French valet Passepartout attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days on a wager of £20,000 (equivalent to £2.3 million in 2023) set by his friends at the Reform Club. It is one of Verne's most acclaimed works.
