Over the course of his volunteer career Avers has narrated more than 300 books spanning multiple genres, a contribution of extraordinary scope that represents thousands of hours of careful, skilled reading placed in the service of readers who would otherwise be excluded from the literary culture that sighted readers take for granted. The National Library Service, established by Congress in 1931 and expanded significantly by the Pratt-Smoot Act, operates through a network of regional libraries and volunteer recording studios and has provided accessible reading materials to millions of Americans across nearly a century — with volunteer narrators like Avers forming the essential human core of its mission.
