The Anatomical Exercises of Dr. William Harvey: De Motu Cordis (1628) and De Circulatione Sanguinis (1649) represent landmark contributions to the history of medicine and early modern science. In these works, Harvey presents his revolutionary theory of the circulation of blood, fundamentally challenging Galenic physiology by demonstrating through empirical observation and experimentation that the heart functions as a pump, propelling blood in a closed, continuous circuit throughout the body. His methodical use of dissection, quantitative reasoning, and inductive logic exemplifies the emerging empirical approach of the Scientific Revolution. Together, these texts not only transformed anatomical understanding but also laid the groundwork for modern cardiovascular physiology and experimental biology.
