First edition, first issue of this classic critique of American life. Octavo, two volumes, half calf bound in three quarter morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, all edges marbled. In near fine condition.
American Notes by Charles Dickens is a travelogue documenting his 1842 visit to the United States. Through critical observations, Dickens contrasts America's democratic ideals with its social issues, such as slavery and the treatment of Native Americans. While he admires aspects of American society, he also critiques its materialism and emerging industrialism, offering a complex view of the country during the 19th century.
