Original World League of Peace manuscript document signed by the last ruling emperor of the Nguyen dynasty of Vietnam, Emperor Bao Dai. Folio, one page, manuscript document in French, docketed on verso, embossed stamp at bottom left on verso. The Emperor writes, in full, "Peace among nations, reconciliation among men of all races, what finer ideal! We must be grateful to the World Peace League for working on that noble task. All goodhearted men must lend it their assistance and support its efforts. Bao Dai Emperor of Annam." Bao Dai reigned from 1926 until 1945 when he abdicated following the August Revolution led by the Viet Minh. Although he briefly returned to political life as head of state under French and later U.S. backing, his role remained largely symbolic, and he ultimately spent his later years in exile in France, marking the end of Vietnam's imperial monarchy. In fine condition. The piece measures 11.5 inches by 16.5 inches. Rare.
The World League of Peace was an organization set up in Switzerland by Georges Dejean following World War I. Its goal was to assemble a collection of manuscripts from current leaders or other notable persons, commenting on the idea of world peace. Compiled over a seven year period, between 1925 and 1932, the anthology became known as the Pax Mundi. The volume included contributions from Marie Curie, Guglielmo Marconi, Albert Einstein, Rabindranath Tagore, and many others.
