American poet Paul Zimmer worked as a shoe salesman, stockbroker clerk, steel mill electrician, and news reporter while serving in the U.S. Army before he became the director of the University of Georgia Press. Zimmer received numerous awards for his poetry including the Yankee poetry prize, Bullis Award of Poetry Northwest, a Pushcart Prize, and a National Endowment for the Arts Writing Fellowship.
