Rare portrait of Winston Churchill by Harris & Ewing. Vintage matte-finish print portrait of Winston Churchill seated in an armchair, boldly signed by him at the bottom in fountain pen. Harris & Ewing was one of the most prominent photographic studios in Washington, D.C., active from 1905 until the mid-20th century. Founded by George W. Harris and Martha Ewing, the studio became particularly renowned for its extensive coverage of political and social life in the nation’s capital, producing an invaluable visual record of American public figures, government officials, and historic events. In near fine condition with light toning and a light paperclip impression to the top left corner. The piece measures 8 inches by 10 inches. Accompanied by the original typed transmittal letter from Churchill's private secretary and dated April 12, 1949. The letter reads in full, "I am desired by Mr. Randolph Churchill to thank you for your letter of February 18 and to return herewith the photograph which Mr. Churchill has signed for you." Also in near fine condition. Triple matted and framed. An exceptional piece with provenance.
