"Faithful but Unfortunate”: Rare Winston Churchill Commemorative Picture Medal
Rare commemorative picture medal of Winston Churchill. Bronze commemorative picture medal laid on the original silk pillow featuring a bold relief portrait of Winston Churchill in military uniform and peaked cap on the obverse with the sculptor's signature to the left "Pierre Turin 1945", on the reverse the Spencer-Churchill coat of arms supported by two sea-horses and the motto scroll reading "Fiel Pero desdichado" (Faithful but Unfortunate) the traditional Churchill family motto, with a quote from Churchill beneath in French that translates to "We have but one desire: to see a France strong and free, surrounded by her empire, and reunited with Alsace-Lorraine." This is Churchill's statement of November 10, 1942 — a remarkable piece of wartime diplomatic history, as it was made in the immediate aftermath of the Allied landings in North Africa (Operation Torch), reaffirming British commitment to a free and restored France. In fine condition. Housed in the original box.
Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on May 10th 1940, Winston S. Churchill became Prime Minister of England and took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany and in campaigning for rearmament. His speeches and radio broadcasts helped inspire British resistance, especially during the difficult days of 1940–41 when the British Commonwealth and Empire stood almost alone in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. A non-academic historian, artist, and prolific writer, Churchill won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his overall, lifetime body of work.
