First edition of the author's classic novel, the basis for the 1960 comedy film of the same name which popularized the 'spring break' pilgrimage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Octavo, original pictorial half-cloth. Boldly signed by actresses Connie Francis, "All the best! Connie Francis," and Dolores Hart, "Blessings Mother Dolores Hart SB." Connie Francis, one of the most commercially successful female pop vocalists of the 1950s and 1960s, helped define the sound of postwar American popular music with her emotionally resonant voice and multilingual repertoire. She is estimated to have sold more than 200 million records worldwide and in 1960 was recognized as the most successful female artist in every other country around the world where records were purchased. She became the first woman in history to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool” in 1960, and also the first to achieve three No. 1 hits on the chart—three milestones among her remarkable total of 53 career hits. In addition to her music career, Connie Francis appeared in a series of popular musical comedies during the early 1960s, most notably Where the Boys Are (1960), which became a cultural touchstone for its depiction of youth, romance, and college spring break rituals. Dolores Hart, a successful Hollywood actress in the late 1950s and early 1960s, is best known for her roles alongside Elvis Presley and other prominent stars before she made the remarkable decision to leave her film career and enter monastic life. Her unexpected affliction with idiopathic peripheral neuropathy—triggered by a dental procedure in 1997—resulted in painful, wheelchair-confined months and spurred her advocacy for increased research, including testimony before Congress in 2006. Her remarkable life has been documented in the Oscar‑nominated short film God Is the Bigger Elvis (2012) and chronicled in her autobiography The Ear of the Heart: An Actress’ Journey from Hollywood to Holy Vows (Ignatius Press, 2013). Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Harry and Marion Zelenko. Rare and desirable signed.
Produced in 1960 and based on Glendon Swarthout's novel, Where the Boys Are was one of the first teen films to explore adolescent sexuality and the changing sexual morals and attitudes among American college youth. Aimed at the teen market, it inspired many American college students to head to Fort Lauderdale for their annual spring break. It won Laurel Awards for Best Comedy of the Year and Best Comedy Actress (Paula Prentiss). The kind of cool modern jazz (or west coast jazz) popularized by such acts as Dave Brubeck, Gerry Mulligan, and Chico Hamilton, then in the vanguard of the college music market, features in a number of scenes in the film.
