First Edition of this Biography on the Legendary Wernher von Braun; Signed by Him
First edition of this biography on the legendary father of modern rocketry. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Boldly signed by Wernher von Braun on the half-title page. Lengthily inscribed by Dr. Carol Sue Rosin, who worked closely with von Braun at Fairchild Corporation and notes that relationship in the inscription. Near fine in a very good dust jacket.
Reputedly the father of rocket technology and space science in the United States, German aerospace engineer Wernher von Braun moved to the United States after WWII as part of Operation Paperclip. While working for the United States Army, von Braun developed the rockets that launched the United States' first space satellite, Explorer 1, and acted as the chief architect of the Saturn V super heavy-lift launch vehicle that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon. Von Braun recieved the National Medal of Science in 1975 and has been featured in countless movies, television series and novels including Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow and the 1998 television miniseries From the Earth to the Moon. According to one NASA source, he is "without doubt, the greatest rocket scientist in history. His crowning achievement was to lead the development of the Saturn V booster rocket that helped land the first men on the Moon in July 1969."
