Rare color photograph of the launch of Apollo 4, the first uncrewed test flight of the Saturn V rocket that later carried astronauts to the Moon, lengthily inscribed by Wernher von Braun to the Leader of Germany's V-2 Rocket Program, "To Dr. Walter R. Dornberger, who opened the road to space which is now traveled by this 3000-ton ship. With warmest personal regards and my best wishes for a Merry Christmas 1967, Wernher von Braun." The recipient, Major-General Dr. Walter Robert Dornberger (1895-1980) was a German Army artillery officer and a key leader of Nazi Germany's V-2 rocket program at PeenemA1/4nde. After World War II, he was brought to the United States under Operation Paperclip, where he avoided prosecution for war crimes and spent decades working in senior aerospace roles with Bell Aircraft and Boeing. He played a major role in the creation of the North American X-15 aircraft and was a key consultant for the Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar project. He also had a role in the creation of ideas and projects, which, in the end, led to the creation of the Space Shuttle. Dornberger also developed Bell's ASM-A-2, the world's first guided nuclear air-to-surface missile developed for the Strategic Air Command. In near fine condition. Triple matted and framed. The entire piece measures 17 by 14.75 inches.
Wernher von Braun (1912–1977) was a central figure in the development of twentieth-century rocketry and space exploration, whose career encompassed both the militarization of missile technology and the advancement of civilian spaceflight. Trained as an engineer in Germany, he played a leading role in the development of the V-2 rocket during the Second World War, a project inextricably linked to the Nazi regime and the use of forced labor. After the war, von Braun became a key architect of the United States’ space program, serving as chief designer of the Saturn V launch vehicle that enabled the Apollo missions to the Moon. His legacy remains complex, combining transformative technological achievement with enduring ethical controversy regarding his wartime activities and their human cost.
