Octavo, bound in three quarters calf over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine in four compartments within gilt bands, morocco spine label, all edges marbled, frontispiece, illustrated with black and white plates. In near fine condition with toning throughout.
John Esten Cooke (1830–1886) was an American novelist, historian, and essayist best known for his writings on the Civil War and Southern life. Serving on the staff of Confederate general J. E. B. Stuart, Cooke drew on firsthand experience to produce works that blend memoir, military history, and romanticized portraiture. 'Wearing of the Gray' (1867) is a collection of Civil War sketches drawn from the author’s experiences and observations within the Confederate Army. Blending memoir, character portraiture, and battlefield anecdote, Cooke presents individualized accounts of soldiers, officers, and camp life, emphasizing honor, loyalty, and regional identity.
