'Voyages from Montreal, on the River St. Laurence, Through the Continent of North America, to the Frozen and Pacific Oceans' by Alexander Mackenzie is a landmark work of exploration literature that chronicles the author’s pioneering expeditions across the Canadian wilderness in the late eighteenth century. The book recounts Mackenzie’s 2,990-mile journey from the Great Slave Lake to the Arctic Ocean—the first recorded navigation of the river that now bears his name—and his subsequent 1793 expedition from Fort Chipewyan to the Pacific via the Bella Coola River, marking the first transcontinental crossing of North America north of Mexico. Celebrated for the precision of its observations and the breadth of its geographic and ethnographic detail, the work opened vast regions of the Rocky Mountains and Pacific coast to further exploration and earned Mackenzie enduring recognition as one of the foremost explorers of the North American continent.
