First edition of this classic work by the author of On the Road. Octavo, original half cloth, pictorial endpapers. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author with a large, full-page inscription on the half-title page, "To Claire and Billy Koumz (Koumantzelis) From Jean-Louis (Jack) Le Brix de Kerouac'h - Great Great Grandson of Pope Pius VI - All Hail Johnny." The recipient, Billy Koumantzelis was one of Jack Kerouac’s closest friends and confidants during his Lowell years. Often referred to as "Uncle Billy," he gained a reputation as Kerouac's bodyguard, rescuing Jack from many a storied Lowell bar brawls. Jack Kerouac's formative years in Lowell, Massachusetts, profoundly influenced his literary voice and thematic concerns. Born in 1922 to French-Canadian parents, Kerouac was immersed in the city's working-class, Franco-American culture. Lowell's industrial landscape, characterized by its brick textile factories and the ever-present hum of industry, served as a backdrop in his semi-autobiographical novel The Town and the City, where he fictionalized his hometown as "Galloway." Kerouac's relationship with Lowell's bar scene was marked by a blend of camaraderie and chaos. Establishments like Nick's on Gorham Street and the Old Worthen House Café on Worthen Street became familiar haunts where Kerouac spent considerable time. At Nick's, run by his brother-in-law, he often found himself among friends and locals, engaging in spirited conversations and consuming copious amounts of alcohol. The Old Worthen House Café, established in 1898, is the oldest bar in Lowell and was frequented by Kerouac, who found solace and camaraderie within its walls. Kerouac's drinking habits were notorious, and his escapades in these bars became part of Lowell's local lore. One such incident involved him collecting empty Harvard Ale bottles, restoppering them, and placing them into a wood-burning stove, leading to a dramatic and unexpected eruption that left patrons both startled and amused. Kerouac's experiences in these bars have now become emblematic of his broader relationship with Lowell—a city that shaped his identity and provided the material for much of his literary output. Very good in a very good dust jacket. An exceptional association.
