First edition of this accessible and striking art-and-science collaboration. Square quarto, original pictorial black cloth, illustrated throughout with 16 new prints by Warhol created for this book. Boldly signed by Andy Warhol on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Text by Kurt Benirschke.
Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was an American artist and leading figure in the Pop Art movement, whose work revolutionized the relationship between art, consumer culture, and celebrity. His innovative use of mechanical reproduction, particularly silkscreen printing, reflected both the aesthetics and anxieties of postwar American consumerism. Vanishing Animals (Springer-Verlag, 1986) is an unusual late-career collaboration between Andy Warhol and the zoologist/conservationist Kurt Benirschke that fuses Pop Art with environmental advocacy. Commissioned to spotlight species extinction, the book reproduces Warhol’s vivid screenprint-based images of a group of endangered animals—presented as full-color plates—while Benirschke supplies the accompanying scientific and ecological commentary on each creature’s habitat, biology, and prospects for survival.
