Under Oriental Skies; Or, Asia Minor and Her Inhabitants (1894) by Antranig Azhderian is both a travel narrative and a cultural meditation, offering readers an immersive journey through the landscapes and peoples of Asia Minor. From the bustling streets of Smyrna to the sacred ruins of Ephesus and the storied sites of the seven churches of Asia, Azhderian weaves descriptive detail with historical reflection, situating the region within a broader tapestry of ancient and modern civilizations. His prose blends the picturesque qualities of nineteenth-century travel literature with a distinctly Armenian perspective, highlighting the enduring beauty of Armenian landscapes and heritage while situating them within the complex cultural exchanges of the Ottoman Empire. More than a descriptive account, the work reveals Azhderian’s reflections on faith, culture, and history, articulating the significance of spiritual and cultural continuity for communities navigating the pressures of empire and modernity.
