First editions of each volume in Dos Passos' epic U.S.A. Trilogy. Octavo, 3 volumes, original publisher's cloth and half cloth. Presentation copy, The Big Money is inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "for Henry Tatnall Brown Sincerely John Dos Passos Provincetown Aug 1 '39." The recipient, Henry Tatnall Brown, Jr. (1900–1983) served as Dean of Haverford College from 1927 to 1942, guiding the institution through a period of growth and change. He later moved into banking in Philadelphia, where he combined professional work with civic leadership. A committed supporter of the arts, he held roles with organizations such as the Philadelphia Orchestra and maintained an active presence in cultural life. His passion for books led him to build a notable library and to co-author Christopher Morley: A Bibliography in 1931 with Guy Redvers Lyle. Bookplate and ownership initials of Joan Whitney Payson to the pastedown and front free endpaper of The 42nd Parallel. Joan Whitney Payson (1903–1975), an heiress from the Whitney family, was a noted philanthropist and art collector. She also made history in 1962 as the founding owner of the New York Mets, one of the few women to hold such a role in Major League Baseball.
To Sinclair Lewis, John Dos Passos was “the father of humanized and living fiction-not merely for America but for the world.” For Norman Mailer, Dos Passos’ “trilogy on America came as close to the Great American novel as anyone,” and Malcolm Cowley hailed this remarkable epic as “the most important and the best of the many American novels written in the naturalistic tradition… a powerful and personal vision” (New York Times).
