Anton Chekhov (1860–1904), one of the most influential dramatists and short story writers in modern literature, revolutionized theatrical form through his nuanced portrayal of character psychology and subtle social critique. In The Cherry Orchard (1904) and Three Sisters (1901), Chekhov presents the disintegration of the Russian aristocracy and the paralysis of the intelligentsia with a delicate balance of tragic inevitability and understated irony. Eschewing conventional plot structures, both plays focus on atmosphere, emotional undercurrents, and the quiet despair of unfulfilled aspirations, marking Chekhov’s enduring legacy in the evolution of modern drama.
