First edition of the author’s first book. Octavo, original cloth. In very good condition. Laid in is an autograph letter signed by Thomas Sharp on his letterhead to Architect Arthur Holden dated September 25, 1951. Sharp mentions Frank Lloyd Wright and Wright’s interest in his book "The Anatomy of a Village." With the original envelope.
Town and Countryside is the writer and urban planner’s first book, which established him as a formidable polemicist. He challenged the popular garden city movement, which sought to unite town and country, by insisting on their separate individuality. He finished the book in the family home in County Durham, an area which was a lifelong inspiration to him.
