To Keep the Ball Rolling is the four-volume autobiography of Anthony Powell (1905-2000), one of the major English novelists of the twentieth century, best known for his twelve-volume roman-fleuve A Dance to the Music of Time. Published between 1976 and 1982 and taking its overall title from a line in Joseph Conrad’s Chance, the memoirs carry Powell from his Edwardian childhood and his years at Eton and Oxford through his life among the writers and artists of interwar London, his wartime service, and his postwar literary career, offering an incomparable portrait of English literary and social life across the century. The individual volumes take their titles from Shakespeare.
