First edition of this seminal work relaying Muir's first experience in the Yosemite Valley which inspired to him to establish Yosemite National Park. Octavo, original publisher's pictorial cloth stamped in gilt, tissue-guarded frontispiece, illustrated with numerous plates and three folding maps. In very good condition, inscription to the front free endpaper. An excellent example.
One of Scottish-American naturalist John Muir's greatest preservation efforts was the establishment of Yosemite National Park in September of 1890. Muir argued that the greatest threat to the pristine valley was domesticated livestock, and used his influence to introduce a bill to Congress to make the area into a national park, modeled after Yellowstone National Park. The Yosemite chronicles Muir's first visit to the Yosemite Valley including general geographical insights and surveys.
