John Ogilby’s 1654 edition of The Works of Publius Virgilius Maro marked a milestone in English publishing, combining classical scholarship with opulent design. A former dancing master turned translator and printer, Ogilby sought to elevate English literature through finely produced folio editions of classical texts. His Virgil was not only a fresh English verse translation but also a triumph of publishing craftsmanship, featuring elaborate copperplate engravings by leading artists of the day. Among the most notable contributors were Pierre Lombart and Wenceslaus Hollar, whose detailed and elegant illustrations brought the epic scenes of the Aeneid, Georgics, and Eclogues vividly to life.
