Octavo, 8 volumes bound in full polished calf with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, double gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn ins and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece of Milton to Vol. I engraved by W. Humphreys forma print by Faithorne, titles in red and black with Pickering's printer's device. In near fine condition. Bookplates. A very handsome set.
English poet and polemicist John Milton was active during a time of religious flux and political upheaval and became best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost written in blank verse. Writing in English, Latin, Greek, and Italian, he achieved international renown during his lifetime and introduced many new words to the English language. In his 1796 biography, William Hayley referred to him as the "greatest English author", and he remains generally regarded "as one of the preeminent writers in the English language."
