Finely bound extra-illustrated set with autograph material and portraits of the works of John Adams. Octavo, 10 volumes extended to 20, bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards by Monastery Hill, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. With the following inserted autograph items: three signed letters from Adams' grandson Charles Francis, the author; a 1787 pay order signed by Thomas Mifflin; the closing salutation and signature of Noah Webster; a document signed by Samuel Ward, 1758; the signature of Frederick North (Lord) dated 1761; a 1779 pay order signed by Francis Hopkinson. Also present are many portraits and prints, with many in color. In fine condition. An exceptional set.
John Adams was a statesman, attorney, diplomat, writer, and Founding Father who was the second president of the United States, serving from 1797 to 1801. Before his presidency, he was a leader of the American Revolution that achieved independence from Great Britain, and he served as the first vice president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. Adams was a dedicated diarist and regularly corresponded with many important figures in early American history, including his wife and adviser Abigail Adams and Thomas Jefferson.
