The Wonderful Visit (1895) by H. G. Wells is an early fantasy novel that blends social satire with speculative imagination. The narrative follows the unexpected arrival of a winged, angel-like being in a small English village after he is mistakenly shot by a local vicar. Rather than being received with wonder or reverence, the visitor is subjected to suspicion, misunderstanding, and cruelty, exposing the limitations and prejudices of late Victorian society. Through this inversion of the traditional “angel visitation” motif, Wells critiques conventional morality, religious orthodoxy, and social conformity, using the outsider’s perspective to illuminate the contradictions of human behavior and the difficulties of reconciling idealism with societal norms.
