Francis Leopold McClintock’s The Voyage of the "Fox" in the Arctic Seas (1859) is a landmark in nineteenth-century polar exploration literature, recounting the expedition he led to discover the fate of Sir John Franklin’s lost Arctic voyage. Sailing in the small steam yacht 'Fox', financed largely through Lady Jane Franklin’s determination to recover evidence of her husband’s expedition, McClintock combined meticulous navigation with careful ethnographic observation and sledging journeys that ultimately recovered written records left by Franklin’s men.
