The Three-Cornered Hat by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón is a satirical novella first published in 1874 that exemplifies the Spanish costumbrista tradition, blending regional color with social critique. Set in Andalusia, the story humorously portrays the failed seduction attempts of a corrupt magistrate (the corregidor) toward a miller’s wife, unfolding as a tale of mistaken identity and poetic justice. Drawing on folkloric motifs and comedic archetypes, Alarcón uses lighthearted narrative and ironic tone to critique institutional hypocrisy and class pretensions.
