A printed presentation statement notes that the set was made expressly for Elizabeth Stauffer Moore of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, “in recognition of her interest in the world’s tribute to the memory of the great bard in the grand international celebration to be held on the three hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.” In near fine condition with light shelf wear. A magnificent personalized set celebrating the world’s homage to Shakespeare.
The Shakespeare Gallery belongs to a long tradition, beginning with John Boydell’s celebrated Shakespeare Gallery of the 1790s, of illustrating the plays through the work of leading painters. This Royal Academy Series gathers scenes and characters drawn from famous paintings by eminent artists, each subject chosen as worthy of a place in the Royal Academy exhibitions, together with authentic portraits of celebrated Shakespearean actors and actresses and descriptive texts by Shakespeare scholars. William Shakespeare (1564-1616), the glover’s son from Stratford-upon-Avon who became the greatest dramatist in the English language, wrote some thirty-seven plays and 154 sonnets whose characters and lines have been painted, performed, and quoted more than those of any other writer. This set was produced for the worldwide celebrations marking the three hundredth anniversary of his death in 1916.
