Octavo, bound in three-quarters morocco by Morrell with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, frontispiece, with color illustrations throughout. In near fine condition. Introduction by Edmund Gilligan. Illustrated by famous illustrator Fletcher Martin. Fletcher Martin was an American painter and illustrator known for his bold, expressive style and depictions of American life, particularly scenes of labor, sport, and war. Active during the mid-20th century, Martin gained recognition for both his mural work under the Works Progress Administration and his illustrations for books and magazines, including vivid contributions to classic literary works for the Limited Editions Club.
Jack London (1876–1916) was a prominent American author whose work reflects the tensions of early 20th-century industrialism, naturalism, and individualism. Drawing from his own experiences as a sailor, laborer, and gold prospector, London wrote vividly about survival, class struggle, and the raw power of nature. The Sea-Wolf (1904) is a psychological adventure novel that explores the brutal clash between individual will and authoritarian power through the character of Wolf Larsen, a Nietzschean sea captain. Set aboard a sealing schooner in the Pacific, the novel follows Humphrey Van Weyden, a refined literary critic who is thrust into a violent and morally ambiguous world at sea.
