First American edition of Lewis' classic novel of spiritual conflict, one of his most celebrated works. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed on the front free endpaper to Horace Somerville Sewell, "H.S. Sewell from E. September 1943." The recipient, Brigadier-General Horace Somerville Sewell, was a British Army officer whose distinguished career spanned both World Wars and reflected the evolving character of imperial military service in the early twentieth century. Serving with notable distinction in the Royal West African Frontier Force and later in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, Sewell demonstrated exceptional leadership and adaptability across diverse theaters of operation. Remarkably, he was among the very few officers of African heritage to attain high rank within the British Army during this period, making his service both historically and socially significant. Horace Somerville Sewell ownership plate to the front pastedown with his coat of arms matriculated in 1940 and established his residence at the medieval Tysoe Manor in Warwickshire, later dividing his time between England and Jamaica, where he served as a Justice of the Peace. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket which is in good condition with chipping and a few tears. An excellent example.
The Screwtape Letters comprises thirty-one letters written by a senior demon named Screwtape to his nephew, Wormwood (named after a star in Revelation), a younger and less experienced demon, who is charged with guiding a man toward "Our Father Below" (Devil / Satan) and away from "the Enemy" (God). Versions of the letters were originally published weekly in the Anglican periodical The Guardian between May and November 1941.
